How do you know you have Carpenter Ants?

There are clues to indicate a colony of carpenter ants may be hiding somewhere on your property. Things to watch for include:

  • Sawdust, insulation or wood shavings on the ground (extermination pros call it “frass”);

  • Visible damage to wood (ruts or groves on the surface);

  • Crackling sounds inside walls;

  • Dead insect carcasses;

  • Shed wings;

  • Seeing the ants themselves.

Argentine Ants

Argentine ant colonies live in moist areas near a food source. Colony numbers fluctuate seasonally, ranging from 100 too several thousand. They live outdoors in shallow nests in moist areas. Argentine ants prefer sweets such as honeydew, fruit juices and plant secretions but will also forage on proteins and fats.

Crazy Ants

Crazy ants are known for their erratic movements. They appear to be lost and confused. There colonies tend to be small, with up to 2,000 workers. Indoors they tend to nest under floors and in wall voids, frequently in hot water pipes and heaters. They prefer insects and sweets but will also eat household food.

Ghost Ants

Ghost ants' nests are moderate to large with thousands of workers. Inside nests are located inside wall voids, behind baseboards, and between cabinets and walls.  They prefer honeydew and insects, dead and living.
